Quick answer

First check whether the problem is sending audio, hearing audio or joining the right channel. Confirm that you and a friend are in the same Fortnite voice channel, check mute and volume, then inspect your platform’s microphone permissions. If Epic reports a voice-service incident, wait for recovery before changing local settings.

1. Run a two-person test

Invite one trusted friend and choose a quiet moment outside a match. Ask them to say a short sentence, then speak yourself. Record whether the failure affects incoming audio, outgoing audio or both. Check physical headset controls, controller mute and the game’s mute indicators before changing software. This simple test prevents several unrelated settings from being changed together.

If the headset fails in your platform’s own microphone test as well, start with the headset connection or system input. If it works there but fails only in Fortnite, continue below. Our diagnostic order is a practical recommendation, not a claim that every symptom has one guaranteed cause.

2. Put both players in the same channel

Epic distinguishes Party chat, which follows your Epic party, from Game chat for the current experience where supported. Open the profile or social controls, check the channel and ask your friend to read their selection too. Being in the same match does not by itself show that the two microphones are connected to the same conversation.

Epic also notes that a voice session can move to another device, and mobile party voice may continue in the background. If the problem began after opening an Epic app elsewhere, check that device. For a controlled test, keep the intended device active and leave the other voice session deliberately rather than signing out of every account.

A party channel and a game channel connect different groups. Check where both players are listening.

3. Fix microphone routing on Windows PC

Check Windows microphone permissions and the actual input and output devices. A webcam, monitor, controller or virtual audio application can create additional choices. Select the microphone you intend to speak into and the headphones you intend to hear through; do not assume that two entries with similar names refer to the same device.

In Fortnite, review the voice method. With push-to-talk, verify the assigned key and hold it during the test. Compare the system microphone test with the game’s indicator, then ask the friend whether they receive audio. Reconnect a USB headset before restarting the game if it was unplugged during play. Avoid reinstalling Fortnite until these much smaller checks are complete.

4. Check PS5 and Xbox system chat

For PS5, Epic directs players to the PS button, Sound and the Mute Game Voice Chat setting. Check that setting and restart Fortnite after adjusting it. Also inspect the controller’s microphone mute state. For Xbox, inspect the party controls and the option to switch to game chat. An empty console party can still be the wrong route for a Fortnite conversation.

On Xbox, communication and multiplayer privacy settings can affect cross-network interaction. Review them for the account actually playing, with a parent or account holder where needed. Test with the same friend after each adjustment. If console party voice works, that confirms one audio path works; it does not prove Fortnite’s channel and permissions are correct.

5. Check Switch, mobile and account restrictions

Epic identifies a potential issue with a 3.5 mm headset while a Nintendo Switch is docked and suggests a compatible USB audio connection in that situation. Match the test to your hardware rather than buying an adapter immediately. Note whether the problem appears only when docked and whether the headset works in its other intended uses.

For child accounts, Epic’s parental permissions and consent status can limit voice features. Ask the parent or guardian to review the account’s permitted communication settings; ordinary audio controls cannot override those restrictions. Do not change a birth date or create a replacement account as a workaround. Keep the test within the communication choices the family has approved.

6. Escalate with evidence, not random network changes

Check Fortnite status and Epic’s known-issue information when several people lose voice together. If the service is working, collect your platform, headset connection, selected channel, exact error and the result of the two-person test. Include whether the issue affects one friend or every friend and whether another audio application works.

Router configuration is a later investigation, not the first response to a muted microphone. Follow device-specific official guidance if support identifies a network issue. If the actual problem is jerky gameplay rather than communication, our PC performance guide addresses that separately. A useful support report tells the next person which layer you have already ruled out.

Your next steps

  1. Test incoming and outgoing voice with one friend.
  2. Compare both players’ Fortnite voice channels.
  3. Check physical mute, volume, input, output and push-to-talk.
  4. Review the platform and account permissions that apply.
  5. Check service status, then report the remaining symptom with your test results.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I hear friends but they cannot hear me?

Start with the input path: physical mute, selected microphone, push-to-talk and microphone permission. Ask a friend to confirm the result after each test.

Why does my microphone work in Discord but not Fortnite?

That demonstrates a working path in Discord. Fortnite can still use a different device, channel or permission, so compare those settings.

Can a console party stop Fortnite voice chat?

Epic identifies console party chat as a cause to check. Leave it or switch to game chat, then confirm both players are in the same Fortnite channel.

Should I reinstall Fortnite first?

No. Check routing, permissions and service status first. Reinstallation is much larger than a channel or device correction.

Can I bypass parental chat restrictions from the audio menu?

No. A parent or guardian must review the permitted account settings and any outstanding consent requirements.
