Fortnite crossplay: how to add friends and play across platforms
Add Epic friends in Fortnite, check crossplay settings on PlayStation and Xbox, and fix missing invites, party access and voice-chat confusion.

Quick answer
To play Fortnite with someone on another platform, add their Epic display name through Add Friends, wait for them to accept, then invite them to your party. PlayStation and Xbox players should also check their platform's crossplay permissions. Being Epic friends, joining a party and hearing voice chat are three separate checks.

Use the Epic display name; a console gamertag can be different.
Crossplay controls differ by platform. PC, Nintendo Switch and mobile do not offer a crossplay-off option in Epic's current instructions.
A missing friend, a blocked invitation and silent voice chat need different fixes.
| Platform | Setting to inspect | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation | Fortnite Settings → Account and Privacy → Gameplay Privacy → Allow Cross Platform Play | Set to Yes for cross-platform matchmaking. |
| Xbox | Xbox account privacy and cross-network permissions | Use Xbox's platform settings; follow the Xbox link in Epic's instructions. |
| PC, Nintendo Switch, mobile | Epic friends, party access and account permissions | Epic currently says crossplay cannot be disabled on these platforms. |
Crossplay, cross-progression and split screen are different
Crossplay lets people on different supported devices play together. Each person uses their own account and game session. You do not need to link your friend's console to your Epic account, and doing so is not a way to invite them.
Cross-progression concerns your own progress across devices; see the Epic account linking guide. Two people sharing one television is split screen, with separate platform and experience restrictions. Solving one of these setups does not automatically configure the others.
Add the correct Epic friend
From the Fortnite lobby, open your profile and select Add Friends. Enter your friend's Epic display name, select the matching result and send the request. They must accept before the normal friend relationship is established. Confirm the exact spelling with them instead of guessing from a similar name.
A PlayStation online ID or Xbox gamertag may differ from the Epic name. If the search returns nothing, have your friend check their Epic account's display name. A recent name change can also make an old name unhelpful. Do not publish account emails or passwords to identify a friend.
Three checks before the first match
Epic friend
Find the correct name and accept the request.
Party access
Check crossplay permissions and available slots.
Voice channel
Meet in the same channel with allowed communication.
Check the setting for your actual platform
On PlayStation, Epic directs players to Settings, Account and Privacy, Gameplay Privacy, then Allow Cross Platform Play. Choose Yes when you want to play across platforms. On Xbox, cross-network access is controlled through the Xbox privacy settings linked in Epic's support article.
There is no equivalent crossplay-off switch to find on PC, Nintendo Switch or mobile in Epic's current guidance. Disabling crossplay where supported may increase queue times and restrict some modes to solo play. A guide that tells every device to use the same toggle is therefore incomplete.
Separate friend requests from party invitations
First establish whether the player appears on your accepted friends list. Then send a party invitation while both players are in the lobby. If one player's party is invite-only, use a direct invitation rather than expecting an open Join option. Ask the party leader to check the selected experience and available player slots.
If the invite is visible but joining fails, record the exact message. As practical troubleshooting, confirm both installations have finished updating and try a fresh lobby after checking service status. A particular island's player limit or an unavailable experience cannot be fixed by repeatedly adding the same friend.
Check parental permissions and blocked players
Epic parental controls can require a parent's PIN to send or accept Epic friend requests. A child account may therefore find the correct person but still need approval. The authorized parent should review the relevant setting; changing the display name or creating another account does not resolve the permission correctly.
Review whether the request is still pending and whether either player has blocked the other. Console-level communication permissions can apply alongside Epic controls. Our parental controls guide explains which settings belong to Epic and which remain with the console provider.
If the party works but nobody can hear you
A successful party invitation does not prove that microphone access, voice permissions and channel selection are correct. Players can be connected in the same party while listening to different voice channels or using a console party chat outside Fortnite.
Use the Fortnite voice chat checklist once the party is working. Check the same channel, the chosen input device and age or parental restrictions before changing network settings. Keeping these checks separate makes it easier to tell which change actually solved the problem.
Your next steps
- Confirm your friend's current Epic display name.
- Send the request through the lobby's Add Friends menu and have it accepted.
- Check PlayStation or Xbox crossplay permissions where applicable.
- Invite the accepted friend to a lobby with room in the selected experience.
- Resolve parental permissions or the exact join error before testing voice chat.
