Quick answer
On PC, Switch and mobile, change your Epic Games display name in Epic account settings. Your email must be verified, and Epic permits a change once every two weeks. PlayStation and Xbox names are managed through their own platform accounts; changing your Epic display name does not rename your PSN ID or Xbox gamertag.

Identify which name your platform displays before editing.
Epic’s name-change cooldown does not rename console accounts.
Changing a display name is separate from linking or merging accounts.
| Where you play | Account name to check | Where to manage it |
|---|---|---|
| PC | Epic display name | Epic account settings |
| Nintendo Switch | Epic display name | Epic account settings |
| Mobile | Epic display name | Epic account settings |
| PlayStation | PlayStation online ID | PlayStation account settings |
| Xbox | Xbox gamertag | Xbox profile settings |
1. Separate your Epic name from your console name
A player can have an Epic display name, a PlayStation online ID and an Xbox gamertag at the same time. Those labels can belong to connected accounts without having identical text. Before making a change, note where the unwanted name appears: in a Fortnite match, on the Epic website or in the console’s own friends list.
For example, changing an Epic name on a phone does not automatically change the Xbox gamertag displayed on the console. This is an account-identity difference, not evidence that the rename button failed. Use the platform table to select the account you actually need to edit.
2. Change the Epic display name
Sign in to the official Epic Games account website and open Account settings. Confirm that this is the account used by Fortnite and that its email is verified. Find Display name, enter the new name and use Continue to complete the change. Read any confirmation before submitting, because another change may be unavailable during the cooldown.
Write the intended name in a private note first and check spelling, spacing and whether you still want it across other Epic services. An Epic display name is not a Fortnite-only nickname. Avoid using a name that reveals a phone number, email address or other information you would not want opponents to see.

Two weeks
Epic display-name changes have a two-week interval.
3. Understand the two-week lock
Epic allows one display-name change every two weeks. Its support page says a lock icon can indicate a recent change; the information icon beside the current name shows when the last change occurred. Check that account information rather than assuming the timer starts when you last opened Fortnite.
A rename on another service does not shorten Epic’s interval. Nor does restarting the game or changing devices create a new entitlement to rename. If you made a typo, record the displayed timing and wait for the field to become available instead of trying to resolve it by unlinking a console.
4. Handle PlayStation and Xbox separately
For the name shown through PlayStation or Xbox, follow the platform’s own account-name process. Epic explicitly says its display-name setting does not change PSN IDs or Xbox gamertags. Review the platform’s current confirmation, availability and any charges before accepting; do not assume Epic’s rules apply to another provider.
Check the active console profile as well. A household may have several profiles on one device, and changing a parent’s or sibling’s name will not rename yours. If the question is which Epic account is connected, use the account-linking guide before making account changes.
5. Fix a missing field or rejected name
If your email is unverified, complete Epic’s verification requirement first. If you have only played on a console, signing in through that platform may show a prompt to finish the existing Epic account’s setup. Complete the requested details on the account holding your progress, then return to the name field.
If a proposed name is rejected, read the specific validation message and Epic’s linked display-name rules. Do not keep trying unrelated account changes. A name being unavailable, a verification requirement and a two-week lock are three different problems with different next steps.
6. Check the change in the right place
After saving, inspect the account page, then reopen Fortnite and look at the same location where the old name appeared. If one platform still shows a different name, compare it with the table above. Save the exact before-and-after labels privately so you can explain the mismatch to support if needed.
Tell regular teammates your new Epic name so they can recognize you. For finding someone across devices, use our crossplay and friend-request guide. If you are also improving account security, set up 2FA on the correct Epic account; a new name is not a security measure.
Your next steps
- Identify the platform and the name currently displayed.
- Open the matching Epic or console account settings.
- For Epic, verify the email and check the two-week lock.
- Review the spelling and confirm the new display name.
- Reopen Fortnite and check the relevant name display.
Frequently asked questions
How often can I change my Fortnite name?
Epic display names can be changed once every two weeks. PlayStation and Xbox names follow their own platform rules.
Why did my Fortnite name not change on PS5?
Check whether you edited the Epic display name while Fortnite is showing your PlayStation online ID. Those names are managed separately.
Can I change my Fortnite name on my phone?
You can manage the Epic display name through its account website. This does not rename a linked PSN ID or Xbox gamertag.
Should I unlink my account to change a name?
No. A display-name change and an account-link change are different tasks. Unlinking introduces a progress-access issue that is unnecessary for a normal rename.
Why is the display-name field locked?
Check the last-change information beside the field. Epic’s two-week interval may still be active; an unverified account can also require setup first.
