How to Enable 2FA in Fortnite: Epic Account Setup and Fixes
Enable Fortnite two-factor authentication on the correct Epic account, finish console account setup and fix the message that 2FA is still not active.

Quick answer
Sign in to the Epic account used by Fortnite, open Password and security and set up a two-factor authentication method. Enter its verification code and confirm that the method is active. If Fortnite still says 2FA is disabled, check the account identity before repeating setup: enabling it on another Epic account does not protect the one you play on.

Start with the Epic account linked to your game.
A setup prompt is not the same as an active method.
Keep a recovery route available before changing phones.
| Situation | Check first | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| PC player | Epic account used in the launcher | Open that account’s security settings |
| PlayStation, Xbox or Switch | Epic account associated with the console login | Sign in through the correct platform provider |
| Finish Setting Up Your Account appears | Missing account details | Complete the existing account’s setup |
| 2FA is active on the website but not in Fortnite | Whether website and game use the same account | Compare identities before enabling it again |
| No verification code arrives | Selected method and its destination | Use the matching email, SMS or authenticator help |
1. Find the account Fortnite actually uses
Open your usual Fortnite session and note the Epic identity before opening an account page in your browser. On a shared computer, the website may already be signed in as a sibling or a second account. A successful security change in that browser session would affect that account, not automatically the console beside it.
For console players, start at Epic’s official sign-in page and choose the PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo provider you normally use. Review the account you reach before changing anything. If the accounts do not match, our account-linking guide explains how to identify the existing connection without treating unlinking as a routine first step.
2. Set up a method and complete verification
In the correct Epic account, open Password and security, find Two-Factor Authentication and select Set up beside your preferred method. Follow the current prompts for an authenticator app, email or SMS. Enter the verification code produced or sent for that method, then look for the account’s confirmation that it is active.
Do not stop at scanning a QR code or receiving an email. The final verification is what connects the method to the account. If more than one method is active, Epic lets you choose a primary method from its menu. Pick one you can reliably access when signing in away from your usual device.
Secure the account you actually play on
Identify
Use the sign-in linked to your Fortnite progress.
Activate
Finish verification for your chosen 2FA method.
Confirm
Check the active status and return to Fortnite.
3. Complete a console account with missing details
If console sign-in opens a Finish Setting Up Your Account prompt, you may have been playing through an Epic account that still lacks some registration details. Follow that account’s completion flow. Epic says completing those missing details preserves its existing purchases and progress; it is different from creating an unrelated fresh account.
Use an email address you control and can keep using. Once setup is complete, return to security settings and activate 2FA there. If the process instead opens an unexpected existing account, check the active console-provider session in the browser. A private window can make that identity check clearer; it does not bypass any security requirement.
4. Diagnose “2FA is not active”
Epic identifies the wrong-account problem as a common reason Fortnite does not recognize a completed 2FA setup. Check the game account, the browser account and the linked console identity as one chain. Repeatedly toggling security methods on the wrong account will not solve a mismatch.
After confirming the correct account shows an active method, reopen Fortnite and retry the action. If the blocked action is gifting, also review the gifting eligibility checklist. Security setup does not replace friendship, account-level, purchase or event-specific conditions.
5. Handle missing codes without losing access
Match the help route to the method you selected: an email code, an SMS message and an authenticator code come from different places. Confirm the displayed destination and use the latest request’s code. Avoid requesting many codes at once, which makes it harder to tell which attempt you are completing.
Before replacing a phone or deleting an authenticator entry, make sure you have another working sign-in or recovery route. Epic recommends enabling at least two authentication methods. Never share a password, live verification code or authenticator setup secret with someone offering to enable 2FA for you.
6. Verify the result you needed
Use two separate checks: first confirm the security method is active in the Epic account, then confirm the intended Fortnite action is available. This gives you a useful diagnosis if one passes and the other fails. Record the exact message and the action you were attempting, rather than reporting only that 2FA is broken.
If account access itself is the problem, use Epic’s recovery and support flow. If the account is managed by a parent or guardian, review the relevant parental settings together. This guide explains account security setup; it cannot change the account’s age, consent or eligibility rules.
Your next steps
- Identify the Epic account used in your Fortnite session.
- Sign in to that account and open Password and security.
- Set up the chosen authentication method and enter its code.
- Confirm the method is active and select a primary method if needed.
- Reopen Fortnite and test the action that required 2FA.
Frequently asked questions
Can I enable Fortnite 2FA from a phone?
Yes. Use Epic’s account website in the phone browser and complete the verification method shown. The important part is signing into the same Epic account used in Fortnite.
Does enabling 2FA on PlayStation or Xbox enable Epic 2FA?
Platform account security and Epic account security are separate. Check the authentication methods on the Epic account linked to your console.
Why does Fortnite still say I need 2FA?
First check whether you enabled it on a different Epic account. Then confirm the setup was completed and review the requirements of the action you are trying to perform.
Will finishing my console account setup remove my skins?
Epic says completing the missing details on that existing account preserves progress and purchases. Creating or linking a different account is a separate action.
Is 2FA enough to make every gift or tournament available?
No. It is one requirement. Gifting and competitive events can have additional eligibility conditions.
